The Pătrăuți Monastery was erected by Stephen the Great in 1487 to serve as a monastery for the nuns who ministered the soldiers wounded in battle. In spite of its small dimensions, the church is one of Moldavia’s medieval religious edifices of high artistic value. The triconch plane, the steeple on the nave and the ceramic decoration on the outside are all characteristic features of Moldavian architecture. The outer frescoes, especially the scene of „The Cavalcade of the Holy Cross,” bear witness to the anti-Ottoman feeling of the time.
